What is
the Gospel?

Christianity begins not with what we do for God, but with what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.


The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the gospel.
— Jesus Christ, Mark 1:15

The Gospel is not advice about how to live a better life, nor is it simply a set of religious beliefs. The Gospel is an announcement—good news—that something decisive has happened in history. In Jesus Christ, God’s long-promised King has come, and God’s reign is being restored.

The Bible tells a single, sweeping story: God created the world good and entrusted it to human beings to steward under his loving rule. But humanity turned away from God, seeking freedom apart from him. The result was not independence, but fracture—alienation from God, from one another, and from the world we were meant to care for. Sin is not only personal failure; it is rebellion that distorts everything it touches.


All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

The Gospel names this reality truthfully. But it also declares that God has not abandoned his world. In Jesus of Nazareth, God enters his creation as the true King. Jesus announces the kingdom of God, heals the sick, 
forgives sinners, confronts evil, and embodies the life of faithfulness humanity was created for. Yet the heart of his kingship is revealed not in power seized, but in power given.

On the cross, Jesus bears the judgment our rebellion deserves. He takes upon himself the guilt of sin, reconciling sinners to God—not as a tragic victim, but as a willing substitute. In the resurrection, God
vindicates Jesus as Lord, breaking the power of sin and death and inaugurating a new creation.


God demonstrates his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The gospel, then, is both deeply personal and profoundly cosmic. We are forgiven by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Christ alone. And at the same time, the risen Jesus is Lord of heaven and earth. To trust in him is not only to receive mercy, but to come under his gracious reign.


If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

Those who belong to Christ are justified and renewed—set free from guilt and drawn into a new way of life. We are taught to pray not only for personal blessing, but: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” The Gospel reshapes our loves, our work, our relationships, and our hopes for the world.
